PAEDIATRIC MURMUR CLINIC (PAEDIATRIC ECHO)

What is a Paediatric Echo?

A Paediatric Echo is a crucial, non-invasive ultrasound test for evaluating heart health in children. It uses sound waves to produce detailed images of the heart, assessing its size, function, and structure.
Beyond diagnosing heart conditions, an Echo is also valuable for routine cardiac health checks, offering reassurance about a child’s overall heart health. It’s a safe, painless procedure that provides essential information for both parents and doctors.
Echo uses sound wave technology to produce live images of the heart, assessing the size, function, and structure of the heart muscle and valves. Additionally, it measures flow and pressures in the heart’s chambers, major heart arteries and veins, and can provide some information about lung function.

How do I prepare my child for their Paediatric Echo appointment?

There are no special requirements to prepare for the echo test and no fasting is required
The child may take all their regular medications or as recommended by their doctor. Please allow 30-45 minutes for the appointment.
The child will be required to take off their clothing from their waist up and lie on the bed on their side.
A Paediatric Cardiac Sonographer will then perform a series of images and videos by a probe prepared with some gel, which they will move around the chest area.
The sonographer may ask the child to change their body position at times and hold their breath occasionally.
There may be slight discomfort due to the pressure applied to their chest by a probe as it is important in creating good quality images.
There are no known risks associated with an paediatric echo scan.
There is no radiation involved during the test.

How do I get the results?

Once the scan is complete the images will be reviewed by a Paediatric Cardiologist and a final report will be created and sent to their referring doctor.
